About the UUID Generator

A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier), also called a GUID (Globally Unique Identifier) in the Microsoft ecosystem, is a 128-bit value standardized in RFC 4122 for uniquely identifying information across distributed systems without a central coordinator. UUIDs are the default choice for database primary keys, API resource identifiers, message correlation IDs, session tokens, and anything that must be unique without negotiation between independent producers. This generator produces version 4 (random) UUIDs entirely in your browser and emits them in the canonical 8-4-4-4-4 hexadecimal layout.

How it works

A UUID v4 is 128 bits rendered as 32 hex digits in five groups separated by hyphens, for example 550e8400-e29b-41d4-a716-446655440000. Of those 128 bits, version 4 fixes 6 of them: the version nibble (the first digit of the third group) is pinned to 4, and the two most significant bits of the fourth group are pinned to 10 binary to mark the variant (RFC 4122). That leaves 122 bits of true randomness, yielding 2^122 possible values. Each UUID is drawn from the browser's CSPRNG via crypto.getRandomValues or the native crypto.randomUUID() API — the same cryptographic entropy source used for keys — so the output is unpredictable and suitable for security-sensitive identifiers.

The collision probability is astronomically low: to reach even a one-in-a-billion chance of a duplicate you would have to generate roughly 103 trillion UUIDs. For any realistic workload, duplicates can be treated as impossible, which is exactly why a central registry is unnecessary.
